Tad Mitchell, President & CEO, Wellright

Tad Mitchell is the President and CEO of WellRight, a leading provider of employee wellness solutions. Mr. Mitchell is the co-author of 21 Habits: A Wellness Survival Guide , and the author of 101 Challenges: Become the Best You . Mr. Mitchell regularly speaks on wellness related topics.

Prior to joining WellRight, Mr. Mitchell was the President and CEO of Compliance11, a software company sold to Charles Schwab in 2011. Mr. Mitchell also authored the children’s book Where Is the Sears Tower?

Dariush Mozaffarian 
Cardiologist, Jean Mayer Professor of Nutrition and Medicine, and Dean of Tufts Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy

The only graduate school of nutrition in North America, the Friedman School’s mission is to produce trusted science and real-world impact.  Dr. Mozaffarian is an authority on the science of lifestyle and CHD from a global perspective; and on systems interventions and policies to most effectively reduce these burdens.   He has authored more than 300 scientific publications and served in numerous advisory roles including for the US and Canadian governments, American Heart Association, Global Burden of Diseases study, World Health Organization, and United Nations.  His work has been featured in the New York Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, National Public Radio, Time Magazine, and many other outlets.  In 2016, Thomson Reuters named him as one of the World's Most Influential Scientific Minds.

Josh Bernoff, Author and CEO, WellnessCampaign.org

Josh Bernoff is the author of Writing Without Bullshit: Boost Your Career by Saying What You Mean (HarperBusiness, 2016). The Globe and Mail called it “a Strunk and White for the modern knowledge worker.” Josh is also the CEO of WellnessCampaign.org, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the pursuit of wellness through changing habits.

Josh is he coauthor of three other books including the BusinessWeek bestseller Groundswell: Winning in a World Transformed by Social Technologies (Harvard Business Press, 2008) and The Mobile Mind Shift: Engineer Your Business to Win in the Mobile Moment (Groundswell Press, 2014).

He blogs every weekday at withoutbullshit.com, publishing commentary on writing, nutrition, politics, technology, and business strategy. His blog attracted nearly two million views in its first two years.

Josh’s nonprofit Wellness Campaign has helped hundreds of people to become healthier and lose weight. In contrast to similar programs, Wellness Campaign’s clinical evidence shows that two-thirds of its participants maintain the majority of their weight loss in the years that follow. Josh has personally lost over 30 pounds in the program.

Josh was previously senior vice president, idea development at Forrester Research, the elite technology research company, and a senior executive in startup companies in the Boston area.

Gil Blander, Founder and Chief Scientific Officer, Segterra (InsideTracker)

Dr. Gil Blander is internationally recognized for his research in the basic biology of aging and translating research discoveries into new ways of detecting and preventing age-related conditions. He leads a team of biology, nutrition & exercise physiology experts, and computer scientists at InsideTracker, and has been featured in CNN Money, The New York Times, Forbes, Financial times, The Boston Globe to name a few.

Dr. Gil Blander received a Ph.D. in biology from the Weizmann Institute of Science and completed his Post Doctoral fellowship at MIT, before going on to found InsideTracker. The InsideTracker platform analyzes key biochemical and physiological markers and applies algorithms and large scientific databases to determine optimal zones for each marker. The system then provides nutrition, exercise, supplements and lifestyle interventions that empower people to optimize their markers, increasing vitality, improving overall health, as well as athletic performance and extending life.

David Martin, Executive Director, Massachusetts Health Council

David is the Executive Director of the Massachusetts Health Council. The Massachusetts Health Council was founded over 96 years ago to promote healthy lifestyles, wellness, preventative care and to address the social determinants of health. The mission of the Council is to foster a culture of health where people’s health and the health of the communities they live in are priorities for policy-makers, employers and civic leaders.

Employer Panel Speakers

Joanna Aronica, Wellness Manager, Maine Veterans' Homes

Joanna is the Wellness Manager for Maine Veterans’ Homes – a group of six long term care facilities in Maine recognized for their exceptional programs and full continuum of care serving Maine’s veterans, their spouses and Gold Star parents. Joanna is a graduate of the University of Southern Maine Muskie School of Public Service earning her Master’s Degree in Health Policy and Management. In addition she has earned both her Professional in Human Resources from HRCI and Certified Worksite Wellness Program Manager designation from the National Wellness Institute.  Joanna has been working in the field of worksite health promotion since 2007, beginning her work with Maine Veterans’ Homes in 2011. Joanna is responsible for overseeing the company’s wellness program for 1100+ employees through development and implementation of the Program’s strategic plan initiatives. Joanna works alongside a team of nine passionate Wellness Champions from various disciplines across the company. She attributes the Program’s success to the dedication of her team and the high level of support from senior management.

 

Carolyn Ballard, Wellness Manager, Cambridge Health Alliance (2016 Silver WorkWell MA Award Winner)

Carolyn Ballard is the Wellness Manager at Cambridge Health Alliance (CHA). She is a Registered Dietitian with a Bachelor's degree in Psychology and a Master's in Nutrition. After completing her graduate education Carolyn worked in a variety of settings providing nutrition counseling to adults for weight management and sports nutrition. She first entered the field of worksite wellness as an Employee Wellness Nutritionist providing onsite nutrition counseling for employees at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta. 

An Atlanta native, Carolyn relocated to Boston in July 2015. Prior to relocating, Carolyn attended a WWCMA networking event which ultimately led to her current role at CHA. As the CHA Wellness Manager she oversees policies and programs related to employee health and well-being, including the design and implementation of initiatives. Carolyn is a member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and the Massachusetts Dietetic Association. She volunteers with the Worksite Wellness Council of Massachusetts Marketing Committee as well as the Gavin Foundation.

 


Laura Bosse, Vice President of Human Resources, Geiger

Laura is Vice President of Human Resources at Geiger.  Headquartered in Lewiston, Maine, Geiger is the nation’s largest privately held promotional products distributor.  Laura’s career at Geiger spans more than 40 years.  She started in 1969 as a Billing Clerk and was promoted into progressively responsible positions within the organization. Returning to school in her 50’s, Laura received a business degree from Central Maine Community College.  In this company of 350 employees, Laura’s responsibilities include payroll and benefit administration, recruiting, employee relations, office services, continuous improvement, and safety and wellness.  She manages the activities of the on-site nurse and the Health and Wellness Team, which she started as a grassroots campaign years before the issue of wellbeing was recognized as a corporate concern. Today, this effort has evolved into a very robust wellness program, with Champions at every level of the company.

 

Jennifer Burt, Human Resources Generalist, Shields Health Care Group

Jennifer Burt, MSHR, PHR is a Human Resources Generalist for Shields Health Care Group, primarily focused on the strategy and management of Shield’s benefits and wellness programs.  Jennifer has spent the majority of her career developing, implementing and managing employee benefits programs.  

Prior to joining Shields, Jennifer worked for South Shore Hospital in Weymouth, MA as a Benefits and Compensation Generalist and spent nine years at SmartPak in Plymouth, MA, leading the organization’s human resources team. Jennifer received a Master’s in Human Resources Management from Emmanuel College and a Bachelor’s in Communications from Bridgewater State College.  


Tom Doane, SVP Human Resources, Avidia Bank, MBA, PHR

Tom’s current role is SVP, Human Resources at Avidia Bank.  He is responsible for leading the human resources function for Avidia including talent acquisition, employee learning and development, compensation and benefits strategy, and performance management.  In addition to his ten plus years of experience in recruiting and HR, Tom has prior experience in graduate student recruitment and continuing education programming.

Tom earned a Bachelor of Arts in History and a Masters of Business Administration from Clark University, is a certified Professional in Human Resources (PHR), and serves on the Board of Directors for the Worksite Wellness Council of Massachusetts. 

 

 

Bob Espindola, Chairman of the Board of Selectman, Town of Fairhaven

Bob Espindola is the Chairmen of the Board of Selectmen in the Town of Fairhaven.  He worked to establish a new Wellness program in the Town and now serves the role of Sponsor. In his role, Bob worked closely with a Wellness Program Champion and Wellness Committee to roll out the program.  This group of volunteers started with no budget and was still able to garner a respectable level of employee participation.  Since then, the team has  applied for and received grants for special programs like diabetes prevention,  a “Working on Wellness” grant from the Mass Department of Health and worked with the Town Health Insurance provider, Blue Cross Blue shield to create an on line web portal and to create several health challenges for Town Employees and their families.

The team advocated for the Town to re-establish a Town Employee EAP program (that had been eliminated years ago), for the Town to set a budget for Wellness initiatives for Town Employees and for the Town to include a Wellness responsibility in the job description of a new Human Resources Position being created under the Town Administrator.

Bob is very proud of the accomplishments of the Fairhaven Team but feels that growth and sustainability of the program will hinge on providing meaningful incentives for employees and their families to encourage participation. 

 

Pam Faccone, Director Global Health, Prudential

Pam Faccone, MS, is a Director for Prudential in the Global Health Organization.  Pam has been with Prudential for over 25 years, starting in the fitness centers.  Her current responsibilities include oversight for all fitness, ergonomic and dependent care programs for employees nationwide.  She is also part of the team responsible for wellness strategy development for the organization.  She has a BS degree in Health and Physical Education from Slippery Rock University and an MS degree in Exercise Physiology from the University of Oklahoma.

Pam resides in Eatontown, NJ with her husband.  They have two grown children but no grandchildren yet.  She recently worked with the City of Newark, NJ to build a Historic Walking Trail.  When not involved with community events, you can find her on her bicycle as she strives to cycle in all 50 United States.  

 
 

Jennifer Forbes, Managaer Employee Benefits, Babson College (2016 Bronze WorkWell MA Award Winner)

Jennifer’s background includes over 15 years of Human Resources management, focusing HR Operations including Benefits, Compensation, HRIS and Payroll. Her award-winning work in the benefits field has been recognized by Cigna Healthcare, The Boston Business Journal and WorldatWork.  

Jennifer is responsible for both the day to day performance and strategic oversight of all aspects of the benefits function, with a particular emphasis on wellness and employee engagement.

 

 

Martha Gagnon, Employee Benefits and Wellness Specialist, AIM Mutual (2016 Silver WorkWell MA Award Winner)

Martha currently serves as the Employee Benefits and Wellness Specialist for A.I.M. Mutual Insurance Companies. She joined A.I.M. Mutual in May 2013, as the Wellness Coordinator for the Injury Prevention and Worksite Wellness (IPWW) department. Martha was then responsible for the facilitation of creating and implementing an evidence based model that would assist small and mid-sized employers in creating  a culture of wellness with measurable results through the A.I.M. Works program.  Martha’s current role is to continue managing this program along with assisting employers in obtaining additional benefits for all employees through the Associated Industries of Massachusetts. 

Prior to joining A.I.M. Mutual, Martha was the Director of Worksite Health Initiatives for the American Cancer Society. There she led large New England employers in developing wellness programs based on specific health risk factors linked to chronic disease.  She was also responsible for ongoing tracking and metrics to measure behavior change over an extended period of time. 

She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Human Services from Lesley University, is a Certified Wellness Practitioner from the National Wellness Institute and a Certified Wellness Program Director (CWPD) through the Chapman Institute of Wellness.

Susan Glover, Benefits and Wellness Manager, CDM Smith

Susan Glover, CWPC is the Benefits and Wellness Manager for CDM Smith, an engineering and consulting firm serving public and private clients around the globe, with headquarters in Boston, MA.  Susan came to this role with over 25 years of experience in  HR and wellness, focusing on benefits and compensation management in the higher education and healthcare industries.  In addition, she served as Director of Corporate Wellness for a benefits broker firm, helping clients in various industries develop and expand their wellness initiatives.  Susan is a graduate of Boston Latin School and Boston University where she earned a BS in Mass Communication, and is a Certified Wellness Program Coordinator through the Chapman Institute.  She also produces and co-hosts a cable television show called “The Healthy Hanover Show” in her town of Hanover, MA.  She is an accomplished runner, raising funds for causes including The Martin Richard Foundation and ALS ONE. 


Glenn Haskell, Benefits Manager, New Balance

Glenn Haskell is the Benefits Manager for New Balance Athletic Shoe.  He has over 30 years experience in managing employee benefits.  Prior to New Balance, Glenn managed benefits at Gillette and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.  He is a member on the Board of Directors of the New England Employee Benefit Council.  He holds a degree in economics from Holy Cross.

 

 



Karen, Hewitt, Wellbeing Manager, Raytheon

Karen Hewitt is the Wellbeing Manager at Raytheon overseeing the Wellness, Work-life and EAP programs for Raytheon’s 60,000 global employees.  Karen has a BS is in Food Science and Dietetics and a MBA with a concentration in Organizational Behavior.  In her work experience she has focused on the value of employee’s health and wellbeing to the bottom line to maximize her influence.

Jennifer Kelley, Wellness Coordinator, Signature Healthcare (2016 Silver WorkWell MA Award Winner)

Jennifer Kelley CWPM, is the wellness Coordinator at Signature HealthCare a non-profit community hospital 22 miles south of Boston, MA. While navigating her career in human resources Jennifer gravitated towards employee benefits and following her own health and wellness journey she found her passion for wellness and applied it to her corporate surroundings. Starting a wellness program at MEDITECH she developed and implemented programming for the company while growing the wellness culture. After completing the Chapman Institute’s Wellness Program Coordinator and Wellness Program Manager Certification, she began her career at Signature Healthcare where she currently develops and implements their entire internal wellness program for employees. 

 

Cara Lamakina, Wellness Manager, Sun Life Financial

Cara Lamakina is a certified Registered Dietitian (RD), Licensed Dietitian Nutritionist (LDN), has her Master’s in Nutrition and Health Promotion and a Certificate in Sports Nutrition from Simmons College.  She has worked in corporate wellness at Sun Life Financial for 16 years, with efforts focused on making employees’ lives better.

Anna Lyons, Vice President Human Capital, Alegeus

Anna Lyons is the Vice President of Human Capital at Alegeus, the industry’s leading consumer healthcare funding platform. Alegeus recognizes that its talent is its greatest asset and works hard to create an engaging culture and a rewarding place to work. Anna leads the company on everything related to making Alegeus a great place to work – including recruiting and on-boarding, compensation and benefits, development and training, organization design and effectiveness, rewards and incentives, and culture and engagement. Donna Madden, Town of Bolton

Donna holds a Master in Public Administration degree from Suffolk University. She worked at Fidelity Investments in Product Management and has served 25 years in municipal finance and human resources.

She has been the Chair of the Minuteman Nashoba Health Group, a joint purchase group of 17 town and school districts for six years.

 

 

 

Chris Mar, Director Compensation, Benefits and Systems, Harvard Pilgrim Healthcare

Chris Mar is Director of Compensation, Benefits and Systems at Harvard Pilgrim Health Care.  He has a 30 year history working in healthcare, high tech, telecom, and biotech.  His current focus is on the employee experience (with 4 generations in the workforce), wellbeing, and the improvement of employee health.  He is constantly looking for innovative solutions with data to support their effectiveness.   


Bridger McGaw, Head of Global and Security Services, athenahealth (2016 Silver WorkWell Award Winner)

Bridger McGaw currently leads the Global Security & Services team at athenahealth, Inc. headquartered in Watertown, MA with offices in six states and India.  In this role, he serves as the corporate security director overseeing safety, security and business continuity for the $5B company.  Bridger joined athena in 2013 as the Chief of Staff to the Chief Marketing officer and Director of Institutional Sales for Epocrates. He is a recipient of the athenahealth 2013 Teach Award and 2014 Owl Award .  

Mr. McGaw formerly served in a number of capacities at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. Appointed by President Barak Obama, he served as the Special Advisor for Cyber Security and Infrastructure Resilience to the Under Secretary of National Protection and Programs Directorate. He advised on critical infrastructure information sharing and risk management initiatives across NPPD’s preparedness, protection, response, and recovery programs. As Director of the Private Sector Office, he facilitated engagement with Fortune 500 executives and security officers addressing numerous policy challenges from intellectual property protection, supply chain security, crisis management, as well as DHS programmatic initiatives to enhance the impact and value of resource investment in partnerships with the public and private sector. 

Prior to his service in the Obama Administration, Mr. McGaw after over four years at Booz Allen Hamilton where he supported numerous government clients on issues relating to emergency management, strategic communications, and intelligence analysis.  Mr. McGaw’s public service also includes roles as Press Secretary to Congressman Marty Meehan, Assistant Press Secretary to Vice President Al Gore, and as a Public Affairs Officer to Secretary of Defense William Cohen. He was awarded the Secretary of Defense Medal for Exceptional Public Service in 2001 and the Secretary of Defense Award for Outstanding Achievement in Public Affairs in 1999.

He was member of “Team Franken” on Al Franken’s 2003 Grammy-award-winning book “Lies and the Lying Liars who tell them: A Fair and Balanced look at the Right.” Mr. McGaw holds a Masters in Public Policy from the John F. Kennedy School of Government, an AB in Government with honors from Harvard College. He is also a graduate of the Federal Executive Institute. 

Kathleen Nelson, Director of Population Health, Signature Healthcare (2016 Silver WorkWell MA Award Winner)

Kathleen Nelson PT, MPH-PHP is the Director of Population Health at Signature Healthcare, a non-profit community hospital 22 miles south of Boston, MA.  Kathleen has 30 years of experience in occupational health and ergonomics focusing on total worker health and wellness. She worked for many years providing ergonomic training and consulting to manufacturing companies and hospitals systems throughout the U.S. and has lectured nationally on safe patient handling and injury prevention. In her role at Signature Healthcare Kathleen oversees the internal wellness program for the employees and spouses across 12 different locations. She works closely with community employers to provide health assessments, wellness programming and onsite clinical services to optimize the health of the employees and reduce the risk factors associated with chronic disease. Kathleen utilizes Lean and 6 Sigma process improvement methodologies to assure there is a continuous cycle of improvement.  

Kathleen is the recipient of the Louis H. Millender, M.D. Golden Rose Award from New England Baptist Hospital, Boston MA for outstanding service exemplifying the compassion commitment and leadership of Dr. Millender a pioneer in the field of Occupational Health.


Barry Rock, Director of Total Rewards, Boston Medical Center HealthNet Plan

Barry Rock is Director of Total Rewards at Boston Medical Center HealthNet Plan.  Boston Medical Center HealthNet Plan is a non-profit managed care organization committed to providing the highest quality healthcare coverage to underserved populations in Massachusetts and New Hampshire.  Barry is responsible for overall strategy, administration, and implementation of employee benefits, payroll, wellness, and HR systems.

Cheryl Sweetman, Director of Human Resources at Palmer Foundry, is a HR Professional with over 15 years experience.  Cheryl is responsible for implementing human resource management stratergies that enable Palmer Foundry to recruit, train and retain a motivated workforce.  Cheryl specializes in employee benefits and learning & development.

 

 

 



Cynthia Yetman, President, AFT Amesbury Local #1033 Union City of Amesbury

Cynthia A Yetman, M.Ed, Certicate of Advanced Graduate Study has been President of AFT Amesbury Local #1033 Union City of Amesbury- for 14 years in her 7th elected term. She is the City of Amesbury's Wellness Champion and Quality Life Committee Member/Mayoral Appointment. She retired after completing 36 years teaching in the Amesbury Public School system as a Technology teacher and Director of Educational Technology. Prior to that she was on the WellPower Blue Cross/ Blue Shield City of Amesbury Committee for 8 years acting as Chair in 2016-2017.

Cythia received a $10,000 Wellness Innovation Award from Blue Cross Blue Shield of New England for City of Amesbury. She also received a Working on Wellness $10,000 WoW grant in  2016-2017. She is married and has one daughter and resides in Amesbury, MA.
